Senior Project Hydrogeologist

Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore Group is the custodian of Rio Tinto’s iron ore interests globally. Our operations including Pilbara Iron and HIsmelt® in Australia, Iron Ore Company of Canada and Rio Tinto Corumba in Brazil with emerging operations in India and Guinea, West Africa.
The Simandou Project in Guinea is the hallmark project within Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s portfolio. The Simandou project is a world class undeveloped iron ore project within Guinea currently undergoing a Pre-feasibility Study due for completion at the end of 2008 followed by a Feasibility Study and mine construction commencing 2013.

The following exciting and challenging role is pivotal in developing solutions to drive the future success of the Simandou Project. This role offers excellent career development opportunities for the successful individual and the rare opportunity to influence a large-scale, high-profile project taking it from Pre-feasibility through construction and development.

SENIOR PROJECT HYDROGEOLOGIST
This role will focus on developing the ground water management and dewatering plans; including identifying and managing any hydrogeological issues which may impact on mine design or resource extraction. Additionally, responsibilities include recruiting and developing a local Guinean hydrogeology team and managing on-site contractors and consultants.

The successful candidate will take a practical approach to hydrogeological investigations, foster a service orientation with key clients, have strong project and contractor management skills and have demonstrated knowledge of mining operations and hydrogeological plan development. Ideally, the candidate will also have previous experience within Africa and developing the expertise of local employees.

The ability to communicate fluently in French will be highly regarded.
