Environmental Officer


Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore Group is the custodian of Rio Tinto’s iron ore interests globally. Our operations including Pilbara Iron and HIsmelt® in Australia, Iron Ore Company of Canada and Rio Tinto Corumba in Brazil with emerging operations in India and Guinea, West Africa.

The global dimension to our iron ore business is best demonstrated by Simandou. The Simandou Project, Guinea, West Africa is a mega project within Rio Tinto Iron Ore’s portfolio. The Simandou Project will involve implementing a 70Mtpa mine + 700km long rail + deep water port with the aim to start construction during 2009.

The Environmental Officer role is important to the successful implementation of the environmental management program, whilst providing expert advice to project personnel.

This is an excellent learning and development opportunity to apply your knowledge on a new project in a developing country. This role will require you to use your technical knowledge to write environmental procedures; implement the environmental management system requirements; train staff and contractors in environmental awareness; conduct regular audits, reports and other field work.

This role requires a graduate with early career experience who is ready to take up additional challenges. The successful candidate will be fluent in both English and French (written and verbal); have an awareness of cultural differences and be confident working with people to collaboratively solve problems. The successful candidate will have had work experience within the mining industry and have a willingness to spend significant periods of time in the field in basic living conditions.
