Environmental Superintendent Operations - Guinea

Accountabilities:
- Provide demonstrated leadership & commitment to Rio Tinto environmental values and promote proactive environmental awareness and behavioural initiatives for the project.
- Ensure environmental issues are identified, addressed through controls, training and improvement programs.
- Manage the development and implementation of site specific and generic environmental management systems and processes consistent with Rio Tinto policy.
- Ensure the investigation of environmental incidents and implementation of corrective and preventative actions.
- Ensure all activities undertaken are designed, planned and carried out in accordance with Rio Tinto safety systems and comply with all relevant local requirements.
- Develop and implement awareness initiatives to increase project teams knowledge, understanding and application of environmental standards and systems.
- Provide assistance in the development of environmental management plans.
- Lead development of the environmental system and procedures through:
a) Review of environmental risk register and legal obligations.
b) Internal audits and checks of the operational areas, including compliance with ISO 14001 standards.
c) Implementation of specific environmental procedures and projects in conjunction with local authorities and the local community (e.g. controlled burning, illegal hunting).
- Support management with incident investigations and impart local knowledge in baseline data collection.
- Develop site-specific procedures and coordinate monitoring programmes.
- Provide advice and support to engineering and geological staff on technical environmental issues.
- Facilitate consultants in baseline data collection for Project baseline studies.
- Provide environmental inductions/training and ensure no safety incidents arise.

Technical Competencies & Skills :
- Fluency in French and ability to communicate in English is desirable.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.

- Strong people focus especially when under stress.
- Ability to handle complexity and problem solve.
- Ability to work with and positively influence other teams (the project team, government, NGOs etc).

Relevant experience:
- At least five years relevant practical experience, ideally in mineral exploration or mining
- Proven supervisory experience
- Experience with ISO 14001 is desirable
- Experience with environmental and communities aspects of mining and exploration highly desirable
- Expert knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory frameworks
- Experience in major project development desirable
- Experience in rolling out consultation programmes
- Previous work experience in West Africa or developing countries
- Strong training skills to enable skills transfer to occur in 2-year period.
