Rio Tinto’s Iron Ore Group is the custodian of Rio Tinto’s iron ore interests globally. Our operations including Pilbara Iron and HIsmelt® in Australia, Iron Ore Company of Canada and Rio Tinto Corumba in Brazil with emerging operations in India and Guinea, West Africa.
The global dimension to our iron ore business is best demonstrated by Simandou. The Simandou Iron Ore Project is one of the most exciting and valuable developments within Rio Tinto. Situated in South East Guinea this world class iron ore province is of exceptional size and quality.
The project comprises development of a 170mtpa mine, a 700km rail system and construction of a deep water port. This is a Greenfield development with unique characteristics demanding a highly innovative approach to development in one of the world’s poorest countries.
The project is rapidly moving through the study period with commencement of construction anticipated in late 2009. Critical decisions are being made now which will shape the future of Mining and Rail technology within Rio for the next thirty years. The project team needs a Strategy Manager who will lead and guide the work of internal and external consultants already evaluating the technology options. Fundamentally different approaches to our traditional Mine and Rail models are being considered, the only drivers being to maximise the project value and the country benefit while minimising the risk profile.
These roles are based within the Study Team in London. Frequent travel to Guinea will be required, coupled with visits to key technology providers in Europe, Africa and Australia.
The central requirement for this role is the ability to form and lead teams conducting the technical and commercial evaluations. You may be from an engineering, operations or commercial background but you will have a sense of urgency coupled with the maturity to set strategic direction for multi-disciplinary teams.
We are seeking exceptional candidates with established credentials in Rio Tinto for this critical role. For this reason we welcome applicants from Rio operations globally.
The ability to communicate fluently in French will be highly regarded.
